Antimicrobial silver ion additive in new T&B product helps reduce surface bacteria 99.9 percent
MEMPHIS, Tenn., July 18, 2017 – Ty-Fast? Ag+? bacteria-resistant cable ties, new from Thomas & Betts (T&B), a member of the ABB Group, are the industry’s first cable ties to inhibit microbial growth, which helps to reduce infection rates and the spread of bacteria.

Molded from an FDA-compliant nylon resin blended with an EPA-registered antimicrobial silver ion additive, patent-pending Ty-Fast Ag-+ bacteria-resistant cable ties prevent the growth of bacteria, fungi and mold on the cable ties’ surfaces. Third-party testing has indicated that Ty-Fast Ag-+ bacteria-resistant cable ties reduce common bacteria on the cable ties’ surfaces by more than 99.9 percent. Tests were compliant with ISO22196, Measurement of Antibacterial Activity on Plastic Surfaces, and measured the additive’s effect on Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) bacteria specimens.
“Industries that are contamination sensitive, such as health care, food processing and preparation, pharmaceuticals, and medical device manufacturing, face the challenge of maintaining a clean environment in the presence of heat, moisture and organic materials,” said Andrew Batterman, global product line manager, Installation Products, at ABB Electrification Products. “When using cable ties in these applications, their notches and grooves provide a hospitable environment for bacteria and other microbes. We developed Ty-Fast Ag-+ bacteria-resistant cable ties to provide a cable-bundling solution that resists microbial contamination.”
Since the early 20th Century, silver has been known to inhibit microbial growth, and valued as a bactericide and for its low toxicity to animal cell tissue. With the increase in antibiotic-resistant bacteria, it has re-emerged as an antibacterial agent in some applications.
Ty-Fast Ag-+ bacteria-resistant cable ties are UL? recognized, RoHS and FDA compliant, and fungus inert in accordance with the MIL-T-152B standard. Their operating temperature range is minus 40 to 85 degrees Celsius (minus 40 to 185 degrees Fahrenheit) and their flammability rating is UL94V-2.
The antimicrobial efficacy of Ty-Fast Ag-+ bacteria-resistant cable ties lasts a minimum of two years from manufacture under normal-use conditions.

Note: Ty-Fast Ag+ bacteria-resistant cable ties provide no antimicrobial inhibitory activity beyond protection of the cable ties themselves.
They do not provide protection against specific pathogenic organisms, nor do they prevent growth of bacteria on adjacent or nearby surfaces.
The antimicrobial efficacy of the material lasts a minimum of two years from manufacture under normal use conditions.
