Ty-Rap detectable cable ties for the protection of products
Ty-Rap detectable cable ties help avoid unpleasant surprises in contamination-sensitive industries.
Nuremberg, November 25, 2014 – Ty-Rap detectable cable ties from ABB, industrial components division, incorporate a unique compound (patent pending) that can be detected by X-Ray equipment, metal detectors and visual inspection equipment. They are particularly well-suited to applications in food and beverage processing, the pharmaceutical industry, for chemical and compounds manufacturing, tire and airbag manufacturing as well as for use in all other contamination-sensitive industries using detection systems to track down prohibited foreign materials in finished products.
Ty-Rap halogen free cable ties and accessories are made of detectable Nylon (NDT) and buoyant Polypropylene (PDT) for liquid-processing applications and are compliant with the FDA regulation, which means the products are intended for use in the proximity of food processing, handling and packaging operations. Both versions are supplied in a unique bright blue colour, which increases their visual detectability.
This range of detectable Ty-Rap cable ties are very helpful in putting into place an effective HACCP System (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points) in the production processes. The HACCP directive is a systematic preventative approach to food production safety that addresses physical, chemical and biological hazards as a means of prevention rather than finished product inspection. By using Ty-Rap cable ties and accessories from ABB you can reduce the risk of product contamination, product recalls and brand reputation damage.
Ty-Rap detectable cable ties provide you the same advantages as the original Ty-Rap, including a smooth body surface with an infinitely adjustable design, high-performance stainless steel locking device for a perfect fit and superior holding power.
ABB in Germany achieved a turnover of 3.37 billion euros in 2013 and employs approximately 10,000 people. ABB is a leader in power and automation technology. The company enables its customers in the fields of energy supply, industry, transport and infrastructure to improve their performance while reducing their environmental impact. The ABB Group of companies operates in around 100 countries and employs about 145,000 people worldwide.

Ty-Rap detectable cable ties help mitigate contamination risks in the food & beverage sector
2014-03-05 - Throughout its history, ABB has pioneered technologies that shape the world around us from the generation of power to clever innovations to make it easier for customers to focus on their core business. It is an ABB company which invented the Ty-Rap cable tie in 1958. A humble product that is all around us, but that continues to be developed to meet a range of specific customer needs.

A cable tie consists of a tape section with triangular teeth that slope in one direction. Once the pointed tip of the cable tie has been pulled through the case and past the ratchet, it is prevented from being pulled back; the resulting loop may only be pulled tighter.
Now Thomas & Betts offers more than 500 types of cable tie and a range of accessories, but the innovation continues – from flame retardant products developed for the rail industry to a solution for the food & beverage industry, the detectable tie rap, the focus is on supporting customers with very specific needs.
Franklin Sullivan, senior vice president product management and marketing, Thomas & Betts, said: “We are proud of the heritage of the Ty-Rap and continue to focus on innovation to meet a wide range of application requirements. We have had particular success with our Detectable Cable Tie, which supports our food & beverage customers with their efforts to mitigate the risk of contamination.
“The Ty-Rap Detectable Cable Tie is designed to be detected easily by metal detectors, X-ray equipment and vision detection systems. Made of polymeric material that contains additives to increase the cable ties’ magnetism and density, they can be picked up by metal detectors and X-ray equipment. Additionally, the cable tie’s bright blue color makes it stand out, which is vital in food processing applications. When made of polypropylene, these cable ties have buoyancy for visual detection in liquid processing applications.”
One example of cable ties being used in food and beverage processing is a baked goods manufacturer in the State of New York. The facility’s head of electrical maintenance was faced with making changes in response to more stringent regulations due to a wave of contamination issues in the food & beverage industry generally.
The plant now uses them throughout its facility, not only to bundle electrical cable, but also to mount signage. For example, when the plant needed to segregate equipment used to process products with ingredients that can be allergens, such as peanut butter, detectable cable ties are used to post signs that indicate which equipment has been segregated for use with these ingredients.
Detectable cable ties
The Ty-Rap detectable cable ties from ABB incorporate a unique compound (patent pending) that can be detected by X-Ray equipment, metal detectors and visual inspection equipment.
Particularly recommended for applications in food, pharmaceutical and other contaminationsensitive industries using detection systems, where cable tie installation residuals (cut tails) are not allowed in the finished product and prevent food contamination and expensive food recalls.

By specifying the Ty-Rap. detectable cable ties and accessories
of ABB for your plant you help reducing the risk of product contamination.
Another great aspect of the detectable products of ABB: they
help your business achieve a great step towards meeting the
HACCP* EU-directive. The HACCP directive is a systematic
preventative approach to food safety that addresses physical,
chemical and biological hazards as a means of prevention rather
than finished product inspection.
The Ty-Rap. detectable cable ties and accessories made of

Main applications for detectable products:
- Food and beverage processing
- Pharmaceutical production
-Chemical and compounds manufacturing
- Tire and airbag manufacturing
-Any other contamination-sensitive industry using detection
equipment
Detection methods
Metal Detection
Ty-Rap. Detectable Cable Ties have been tested and are rated
at 1.5 mm diameter ferrous sphere setting. Therefore sensitive
enough to be picked up by nearly every metal detector in service.
X-Ray Detection
X-Rays are the future of the detection industry. Depending on the
density of the product being verified, Ty-Rap. Detectable Cable Ties
reach an impressive differential of between 200 and 2000 on the
X-Ray grey scale.
Visual Detection
Visual detection systems detect surface irregularities and volume
changes. This method is often used in beverage and chemical
processing plants. The bright blue colour ensures an easy visual
detection.
